The wonderful light of the Mediterranean has always fascinated artists. Mallorca has a very lively art scene, with museums and countless galleries, studios and the annual Nit del'Art in Palma.
In April, Galerie H22 will present works by Shobhana Tyroller and Emilio Ruiz Cardona. The two could hardly be more different, but what unites them is their artistic focus on light, the light of Mallorca.
At a joint exhibition, the Biennale Islandarte in Palma, she met the artist Emad Korkis and had the idea of inviting her to Wiesbaden.
Shobhana Tyroller has lived a very secluded life on her finca near Santanyi for over 30 years - after a very eventful life in Africa, the USA and India. Her paintings can be found in collections in Spain, the USA, Belgium, France and Germany.
"With my paintings I want to create an oasis of calm, a playground for wandering thoughts. I sail on my inner seas hoping to convey through my art peace and harmony, a smile of the blue sky and a music of silence. I am a spectator of the movements that arise, in the oblivion of concepts, without belief and law. My life has been far from a straight line. It has taken me from adventure to adventure, from country to country, helping me to come into contact with different cultures, art forms and expressions."
Emilio Ruiz Cardona is from Palma, he loves the lively atmosphere, the fish market, the port, the alleyways with the bars. His exhibition in the Galeria C'an Boni in Palma, "The Dark Side of the Light", received a lot of media attention. He has been represented in Madrid, Luxembourg and Ruhr/Germany.
"From a young age I walked around all day, drawing subjects from my imagination and finally giving them meaning by projecting shadows into the reality of my surroundings. I sketched my own language and I felt that I would be an artist. The themes in my works always have light as the main protagonist. Being born in the middle of the Mediterranean conditioned my artistic genetics with sea, heat, blue sky and an overdose of light."
The exhibition is curated by the Wiesbaden gallery owner Sibylle von Oppeln-Bronikowski.
